Strawberries – the freshest taste of spring

Written by: Teodora Đurnić

With the first warm days, strawberries appear on market stalls and dining tables. Their distinctive sweet and fresh aroma, along with a flavor that balances sweetness and gentle acidity, makes them one of the most joyful symbols of the season.

While perfect on their own, strawberries are an essential ingredient in a wide range of dishes and beverages—from light breakfasts, smoothies and refreshing lemonades to irresistible desserts, and increasingly creative savory combinations in modern cuisine. In addition, they are rich in vitamins, antioxidants and fiber, offering not only pleasure but also numerous health benefits.

Strawberries reach their peak season in May and June, when they are at their juiciest, most aromatic and full of flavor. This is also when they arrive fresh from local fields and markets across Montenegro, preserving their natural freshness and fragrance. Their short season makes them an even more special treat that we look forward to every year.

More than a dessert

In gastronomy, strawberries hold a special place thanks to their versatility and ability to complement a variety of flavors and textures. Although most often associated with sweet dishes, their role goes far beyond classic desserts. From simple breakfast combinations with yogurt, honey or granola, to fresh fruit salads, strawberries are a frequent choice for light and healthy meals.

They are also indispensable in the world of desserts—used in tarts, ice creams, creamy cheesecakes and strawberry mousses. Their natural freshness pairs beautifully with whipped cream or chocolate, creating balanced and visually appealing treats.

However, strawberries are increasingly finding their place in savory cuisine as well. They are often combined with cheeses such as mozzarella or goat cheese, along with nuts and fresh greens, where they bring a refreshing contrast and enhance the flavors of other ingredients. In modern cooking, they are also used in sauces or as an addition to meat dishes, adding a subtle note of freshness.

It is precisely this ability to shine in both simple and sophisticated recipes that makes strawberries one of the most inspiring seasonal ingredients.

Refreshment with a strawberry twist

Beyond the plate, strawberries have also found their place in the glass, adding freshness and aroma to a variety of drinks that perfectly complement warmer days.

During spring and summer, they are especially popular in lemonades, where they are combined with citrus and ice to create a light and refreshing beverage. Strawberry smoothies, often blended with banana, yogurt or milk, are a favorite choice for a quick and nourishing treat.

Strawberries are also playing an increasingly important role in the world of cocktails. From light spritzes and fruity sangrias to classics like the mojito, they bring freshness and a gentle sweetness that perfectly balances alcoholic notes. For this reason, they are often a top choice on seasonal cocktail menus, where they are paired with fresh herbs such as mint or basil.

A natural boost for health

Beyond being a seasonal delight, strawberries offer a range of health benefits. They are rich in vitamin C, which plays a key role in strengthening the immune system, as well as antioxidants that help protect cells and slow down the aging process. Their composition also supports brain function and helps maintain good memory.

In addition, strawberries are light and low in calories, yet nutritionally rich, making them an easy addition to everyday diets. Their plant compounds may contribute to heart health and overall vitality, while their natural freshness and high water content help keep the body hydrated and balanced during warmer days.
